How to prepare a useful website project brief

Explain your audience, pages, content and key workflows before requesting a website quote.

A useful website brief explains who the website is for, what visitors should do and what your team needs to manage. You do not need to choose the technology before describing the problem.

Start with the business goal

Write down the main purpose: generating enquiries, explaining services, selling products or supporting existing customers. Choose one primary next action for visitors, such as contacting your team or requesting a quote.

List the pages and content

Outline your Home, Services, About and Contact pages. Add articles or case studies if you have material to publish. Gather your logo, approved business details, service descriptions and photographs you have permission to use.

Describe the important workflows

Explain what happens after someone submits a form. Who receives it? Does a staff member need to assign it or reply? If the site needs payments, bookings or customer accounts, describe the expected steps and exceptions.

Separate launch needs from later ideas

Mark each item as needed for launch or suitable for a later phase. A clear first release is easier to review and maintain. Keep existing URLs and content on the list if you are replacing a website.

Agree what completion means

Include mobile checks, content review, form testing, ownership of accounts, access for editors and the handover. Ask for recurring costs and support responsibilities to be written down.

Your brief checklist

  • Audience and primary action
  • Pages and approved content
  • Forms, payments and integrations
  • Launch priorities and timing constraints
  • Existing website URLs and hosting details
  • Who reviews, approves and maintains the site
