In brief
A practical, no-jargon SEO checklist for Ugandan small businesses. Follow these 12 steps to improve your Google ranking and get found by more customers.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) does not have to be complicated. Follow this 12-step checklist and your Ugandan business website will start climbing Google rankings.
Step 1: Set up Google Search Console (FREE, 10 minutes)
This free tool from Google tells you exactly how your site performs in search: which keywords bring traffic, which pages rank, and what errors need fixing. Sign up at search.google.com/search-console.
Step 2: Claim your Google Business Profile (FREE, 15 minutes)
For any business serving a physical location in Uganda, this is the single most important SEO step. Fill in every field: address, phone, hours, photos, services. Businesses with complete profiles appear higher in local searches.
Step 3: Make sure every page has a unique title tag
Your page title appears as the clickable headline in Google results. Keep it under 60 characters, include your main keyword, and make it compelling. Example: "Website Design Kampala, Professional Business Websites, TFast" instead of just "Home."
Step 4: Write unique meta descriptions for every page
The meta description is the snippet of text below your title in search results. Keep it under 160 characters, include your keyword naturally, and make it a mini-ad for that page.
Step 5: Use clean, descriptive URLs
yoursite.com/services/website-design is much better than yoursite.com/?p=123. Clean URLs help both Google and customers understand what the page is about.
Step 6: Make your site mobile-friendly
Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it ranks your site based on how it performs on phones. Test yours at Google's Mobile-Friendly Test.
Step 7: Speed up your website
A slow site loses customers and rankings. Compress images, use a good host and minimise unnecessary code. Aim for under 3 seconds load time on a 3G connection.
Step 8: Add your business to Ugandan directories
List your business on Ugandan platforms like Yellow Pages Uganda, Uganda Business Directory and industry-specific listings. Consistent Name, Address and Phone (NAP) information across all listings boosts local SEO.
Step 9: Start a blog and post consistently
Every blog post is a new page Google can index. Write about topics your customers search for, answer their questions, solve their problems. Aim for at least 2 posts per month.
Step 10: Use headings properly
Each page should have one H1 (main heading) and multiple H2/H3 subheadings. Include your keywords naturally in headings. This helps Google understand your page structure.
Step 11: Add internal links between your pages
Link from your blog posts to your service pages. Link from your homepage to key services. Internal links help Google crawl your site and spread ranking power between pages.
Step 12: Track your progress
Check Google Search Console monthly. Watch your clicks, impressions and average position. SEO is a long game, but seeing your rankings improve week by week is motivating.
Bonus tip: Get Google reviews
Ask every happy customer to leave a Google review. Even 5–10 genuine reviews significantly improve your local search visibility and customer trust.
