Digital Skills Initiative – Uganda
The Digital Skills Initiative (DSI) is a planned TFAST programme to give young people in Uganda practical access to computers and digital skills. It is in the planning and preparation stage. We are asking for working devices, funding, skills support and volunteers. We are not publishing numbers of learners, devices, partners or sponsors, because none are confirmed yet.
Key facts
- Run by: TFAST Digital Agency, a Ugandan sole proprietor business name. Programme lead: Kalyango Brian.
- Base: Bulenga / Ssumbwe, Wakiso, Uganda
- Status: planning and preparation
- Not a charity: TFAST is a business, not a charity, NGO or non-profit
- Last updated: October 1, 2026
What problem does the initiative address?
Computer skills are learned by doing. Nobody learns to type, build a web page or write a first program only from theory. They need time on a real computer and a way to get online. Young people in Uganda may still find both hard to reach. Brian knows this from his own start: around 2005 he had limited access to computers and internet and nobody to teach him, and he had to learn on his own. Read his story.
What is the proposed solution?
The plan is a supervised, hands-on programme where learners share computers in turn, so that each machine helps many people over time. The planned focus is:
- computer basics, typing and safe internet use for younger learners;
- documents and everyday digital tools;
- beginner web, software and mobile skills for older youth.
The final modules, schedules and locations are not yet confirmed. We do not promise jobs, certificates or any particular outcome for any learner.
What exactly are we asking for?
- Devices: working laptops, desktop computers and accessories that are already in Uganda or bought locally, plus networking equipment and power protection.
- Funding: support that lets us buy devices locally and pay for internet data. Message us first so we can explain what is possible at the moment.
- Skills support: trainers, mentors, guest speakers and help with learning material.
- Volunteers: people who can help set up computers, run sessions or support learners. Roles near children need safeguarding steps first.
- Partners and introductions: schools, community organisations, companies and individuals who can help us reach learners or resources.
We have not set public targets for numbers of devices or learners. When we do, they will be real and we will say where they come from.
Can devices be sent from abroad?
Please contact us first and do not ship anything. Uganda has import rules for electronics, including used computers, so a well-meant parcel can be held or refused at the border. For that reason we do not ask people abroad to send used equipment. If you are outside Uganda and want to help, there are other ways.
What progress can we show so far?
At this stage there are no programme results to publish. When there are real records, such as devices received and their condition, dates, consented photos and short updates, we will add them to this page and to the transparency page.
Why does this matter?
Access is the first step. A young person who can practise on a computer every week can learn, try ideas, make mistakes and improve. Read more on the why support matters page.
